Hearthwing

A blizzard. Three wolves. A young mother with nothing left but a torch and a crack in the rock just wide enough for her baby. She doesn't survive the night. The baby does, because a dragon heard her cry.

The dragon who takes Mara in has just lost an egg of her own. She keeps the child warm under her belly, finds her milk, teaches her to hunt, and finally gives her the one thing a dragon never gives away: her gold, so Mara can go down the mountain and learn to be human. But dragon gold draws hunters.
